My four year old rubbed a magnet on the television screen and now there's a "rainbow" of distorted colours? How can this be fixed?

So easily fixed it's funny. It needs to be what's called "degaussed". The TV actually has a weak degausser that work every time you turn on the TV cold (after off for about an hour) that will eventually get rid of the effect after some on/off cycles. If the TV isn't too heavy, you can take it to your local TV repair shop,, not a circuit city, but a real repair shop, and the tech can fix it in about 5 mins,, while you watch with a degaussing loop.

It can't. The magnet caused the phosphor coating on the inside of the CRT to become slightly magnetized, which attracts the three electron streams from the red, green, and blue electron guns to strike the area "off-center" of its intended color. It might clear up eventually. It depends on how strong the magnet was. My son did the same thing to my pc monitor a few years ago, and the rainbow faded...after almost a year!
If it's not a big screen and you can afford it, I'd just replace the tv.
