Please do. I'm a waiter/bartender and although we don't get a reduced pay because of our occupations, we do offer a service and there are many sacrifices we make in order to make people have a great time.

I suppose it is very much a choice whether you want to tip or not, but if you are in a fine dining restaurant you MUST tip. Tipping $1 means you had an awful time. Not tipping just makes the waiter think you are forgetting to tip, or for some reason maybe you did have an awful time, but it's the best feedback to tip an amount calculated from the total.
$1 is a "thanks but no thanks" tip.
5% is an average tip.
10% is a slightly above average tip.
20% is a really good tip which has to be well deserved with constant, yet undisruptive attention.
If you go above 20% you can probably expect the waiter/waitress to make sweet and passionate love to you.

How much should you tip in restaurants?

Federal law allows restaurant owners to pay less then half of the minimum wage in this country. But how many people knows that? And you as a consumer have to make up the difference!!! Many, trying to survive high gas prices are trying to save by tipping little less.

Growing fast fairtip.org is a newly found organization to educate public in fair tipping in restaurants.Or inlcude an automatic gratuity of %20 added to every check. Why?

It's members are servers and organization is growing fast. More details at www.fairtip.org

Whenever I have had the misfortune of waiting on Aussies visiting the US, they are either very poor tippers or a stiff!!
I have heard that they get paid a pretty descent wage as servers in their own country so tipping is not customary there. Not sure how true it is, but it's the only thing that makes any sense. Unless they are ALL tightwads!!!!

I tip the same down under as I do in the US, 15-20%.

The very same as any where else! if the service is good- leave 20% of the total bill. If the service sucks tell them to kiss your booty!
