Hi, with reference to Purple Girl's answer above - I live in Darwin and it does NOT have the highest annual rainfall in Australia (by a long way).
The area with the highest average annual rainfall for Australia is in Northern Queensland. The three wettest towns are Babinda, Tully and Innisfail - they compete each year for the title of wettest town in Australia in a competition called the "Golden Gumboot". To my knowledge Tully has the record for the most rain ever recorded in Australia in one year and that was 7.9metres in 1950. There is more info on rainfall at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology at www.bom.gov.au

The Eastern Highlands, or Great Dividing Range, lie near the eastern coast of Australia, separating the relatively narrow eastern coastal plain from the rest of the continent. The Eastern Highlands have the greatest relief, the most rainfall, the most abundant and varied flora and fauna, and the densest human settlement

Here's a site that tells about rainfall in different Australian cities. Tropical Darwin is Australia's wettest city with a yearly average of 1,714 mm

I hope that helps.

I used to live in Innisfail in far North Queensland. It was between Babinda and Tully. Babinda and Tully competed for the golden gum boot award every year -- awarded to the locality in Australia which received the greatest amount of rainfall. Sometimes they measured the rainfall in meters -- not millimetres!
Queensland's tallest mountain, Mt Bartel Frere, is there. The locals say: 'If you can't see Bartel Frere it is because it is raining. If you can see it is means it is about to rain.'
