Stretch out for 30 minutes before walking; work up to this, starting with about 10 minutes. Afterward, do a few cool-down stretches and, if time permits, soak in Epsom salts and warm water in a bath (it can even be bubbly).

I remember reading somewhere that tired leg pains calf pains and so on are sometimes caused by a vitamin deficiency, it may have been zinc, it was a trace element anyway, so I tried popping a multivitamin tablet, and it worked! As well as that I have two boys, and they used to get bad sore legs when they were growing, about 8 years old, and the way at first was to massage their calf's and warm them with warm water bottles etc. I got the job usually at 2am or 3am in the morning, lol I bought the kids the junior vitamins from Boots, they are like fruit gums but softer, and they would have one when the pains started up, and again it worked wonders! Might be worth a try.

Buy a car. walk less.
I used to think nothing of walking 5 miles, now 100 yards needs some planning, why I damaged a hip in a school PE lesson over 30 years ago and 10 years ago it caught up with me. If I drive everywhere possible and walk as little as possible it is containable, if I walk 200 yards within 1 hour of sitting down I get cramp and cannot remain seated which means I am unable to cintinue working, sometimes a few yards walking sorts it but only for a few minutes, so I am serious.
Also my wifes uncle got super fit by cycling then his leg broke, bone cancer probably never have realised he had it if he had watched telly andf driven everywhere. The fitted a plastic bone then amputated but he still died.

It really makes a difference if you could wear special trekking shoes. Then, besides everything else already mentioned here, it's good to lie down as much as possible when you go home, or at least keep your feet horizontal on a sofa or on an extra chair. And if you wear pantyhose, there are those special ones that put a light pressure on your feet and supposedly prevent blood from accumulating in the feet and making them feel heavy.

Rest And Elevation. Soak those muscles.

That is the best part of coming back from a good long walk.
I love walking you cant beat it.

If your in England you should try the Calderdale way. It is a good walk for an intermediate Walker.

For an Experianced Walker you should try the Pennine way.

I've found gentle 'air' exercise (where you lie on your back and gently peddle in the air, or just hold your legs in the air for a while) and then a nice soak (epsom salts added) where you gently massage your calves in the water and then just lie back with a warm flannel over your face for about half an hour - works for me every time - and I sleep like a baby afterwards.
Sweet Dreams!

Much as I don't like to advertise companies, I spend lots of time on my feet and have found that the Dr. Scholl's massaging inserts (the ones with the stupid "gellin" commercials) in my shoes help quite a bit.

Drink more water. Pain and cramp is caused by a build up of toxins that need to be flushed out.
