Yes, you can sin by your thoughts....such as lusting, etc. If you don't have forgiveness for that sin, you will be punished in the end.

Kiki, everyday I thank G-d that we do not live in a world of Orwellian though crime, well, at least we don't yet. We are free from divine or external punishment for our thoughts. However, we are often our own worst enemies and tend to punish ourselves a gread deal for what we think about. But there are ways to keep our minds on better things and these means should be healthy. Keep yourself busy; study, work and meditate etc. Don't worry too much about it.

We can commit sin just by thinking of it Mathew 5:28, God is merciful,if we regret and repent God will forgive.
I imagine if we get punished for our thought then not even a single person in this world will be spared from this punishment

God does hold us accountable for our thoughts. Jesus said "Whoever looks at a woman in lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart". Many of His teachings show how evil actions come from evil thoughts and desires, and God holds us accountable for these things.

Now this does not mean that every idle thought that pops into our minds is sin. God doen't hold us accountable for thoughts that pop into our mind, just the ones we let stay there.

But even when we do sin in our thoughts, we still have the cross of Christ to take away those sins if we turn away from them and trust in Jesus. So guard your thoughts, and if something that shouldn't be there pops in just "take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5). And even if you do stumble in this (and we all do), just trust in God and ask His forgiveness. God isn't sitting up in heaven waiting to whack us with a hammer every time we mess up. He loves us, and His mercy is simply amazing.

According to the Book of Mormon Alma 12:14, "For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence."

So according the passage of Scripture, that come judgement day our thoughts will condemn us also.

Jesus had some thoughts on the matter, here's what he had to say: "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matt 5:27-28 KJV

Yes, it has happened in history. For example, Sir Thomas More was imprisoned for disagreeing with King Henry VIII regarding his desire to divorce and remarry which the Catholic church was opposed to.
