it's the cultural practice in most asian homes.
we usually take them off outside, before entering through the door. most homes will have a shoe rack for guests to leave their shoes. if not, leaving them just outside the door is fine too.
in my home, i usually change into bedroom slippers and my guests are invited to too.

Yes I have a no shoes rule for my home. I remove my shoes at the door and then put them away. Family and friends know the rule and for the most part comply. I have a friend who is forgetful about this even though she has the same rule for her home. My housekeeper needs to be reminded occasionally, but I bought her a pair of slippers to wear while she is in my home and that has solved the issue

We have a really big house, and usually the help vaccums so we dont have to worry about dirt. But, there are several rooms with white carpe, so we ask guests to take off their shoes before they enter. If you need a place for guests to leave their shoes, try putting in wire shelves, or a shoe tree. Look at storables.com too.

You always ask such good questions!
I take my shoes off as soon as I walk in the door.
My guests, most of them, see my shoes by the door and they do the same. It's not a rule, but I would hope that people feel comfortable enough in my home that they would remove their shoes.

I have house shoes (tennis shoes only worn in the house) that I wear all the time... Guests remove theirs at the door but are encouraged to bring slippers or house shoes if they want.

Yes. We take our shoes of at the door and I would never walk into someone's home with mine on. I would hope they would do the same thing but I wouldn't ask them to take them off.

always, it seems so gross to me that people should wear their shoes in their homes, after walking on sidewalks through muck and dirt. Also, since I am Hindu and keep an image of my God in the house, I would not want to regularly walk before the idol with my shoes on -- it seems disrespectful. I leave my shoes at the front door.

Yes for family and close friends only. We have a special rug as you come in the door. But when people come over that are not close friends we don't say anything. It does keep the dirt and sand down but it doe sent' have to be a real big issue. Except for my son he knows the rule.

No I don't have that rule in my house, but I always take my shoes off before I enter other peoples houses (and I don't know anyone who does have that rule).

Since we wear barn boots 90% of the time, yes we remove our footwear.
The driveway is gravel, so we ask guests to remove shoes too.
Then I don't pick up gravel in my socks.
