Yes, we are!
Come on down and see first hand. Just be sure to accept us for who we are, and that's the fact that we say yes ma'am and no ma'am, please and thank you. We also say the blessing before we eat, and the food is quite yummy when kept with tradition.
When people are trying to pull out onto a busy street, we stop and hold traffic to let them pull out. Then whoever is let out onto the street gives a courteous wave as to say thank you. No one dares to blow the horn at you, because most people do it.
We hug our friends and family members every time we see them...no matter how long or short the time has been in between visits.
These are only a few things I have personally noticed about us as a society that really sets us apart. There are others of course- like our accent, but these are the characteristics I miss most when I'm away from home. ;^)
A word for "EB Gal"... I'm sorry about that. Trust me when I say that we don't do that. That's racist, not "southern". Two different things goin' here. Come to my house and get some real southern hospitality. We'd love to have you.

I've lived in both South and North, and there is a perception that people in the South are friendlier - but only if you are white. I've heard white Southerners say extremely rude things to black people seconds after being most courteous and helpful to me.

Having lived in California (the North's western cousin) and Texas, I've found that people in Texas are as a rule more polite than people in California. And having communicated with people from all over the US on various forums, I feel that people from the South much more polite than people from the North, especially the North-East.

I am Russian and lived down south for 5 years, in Mississippi. Now I live up north in Connecticut and yes, trust me people are much friendlier down there, even to foreign people.

I have traveled BOTH and NO they are NOT friendlier !!!....
However I have found (opinion only due to experience) that people in the southwest are MUCH ruder than the southeast.
I have found the Midwest to be the friendliest, even in the big cities.
The next person may tell you different due to their individual experience.

They are politer. I was in South Carolina for a summer from new England. They say hello, good-bye, etc, when we Yankees don't. But from what I saw it didn't go much beyond that.
