considering that any hooked bill bird can be and is classified under the Parrot catagory might I suggest that you pick up a cockatiel or a parakeet? The desire to own a bird such as a macaw or a cockatoo or amazon must be overridden by the commonsense that I am sure you have in the fact that you have asked the question that you did. I no doubt believe that you would make a fine owner of a bird but you must start small. My first was a conure.(sun to be exact) and can i just say that thing was loud... and demanding, and loud did I mention that??? anyway a bird can out live its owners and that needs to be considered when your looking into getting a bird. if you want inexpensive (not cheap) then look into the smaller birds conures keets and tiels parakeets and cockatiels start around 20.00 and conures start around 200.00 all are good birds for a first timer. if you insist on a big bird then amazons are great so are greys. macaws and cockatoos require slightly more work (oh and macaws and cockatoos can snap a mop handle in their beak) Good luck!

I totally understand your not wanting to spend that much money on a parrot.
But the initial cost of the parrot is just the tip of the iceberg.
Purchasing a bird in a retail Bird Supply store will run anywhere from 700.00 to 1200.00 depending on availability and where you are located.
Even adoption costs are going to run 200 to 500 dollars for a larger bird.
But the cost of the bird is the smallest part of where your money is going to go.
A decent cage will be at least 250.00. (Do you have room for a large cage; at least 3 feet wide by 2 and half feet deep by 5 feet high?) Accessories: perches, bowls, swings, an additional play gym, a carry-cage etc. are a lot more money. Add replacing perches and swings from time to time. Annual Vet bills for a wellness checkup is going to run 150.00 and up.
Toys at the minimum per year is going to run you about 100.00, probably more.
Food and supplements are going to be at least about 20.00 to 30.00 a month. This includes Pellets, healthy fruit and vegetables, vitamin and mineral supplements, treats, and other odds and ends.
The point I'm trying to make is most people familiar with the cost of the upkeep one just one parrot figure it will cost you anywhere from 600.00 to almost 1600.00 a year.
So if you think about it, year-over-year, the least inexpensive part of owning a parrot is the initial cost of the bird.
This is an annual outlay of a minimum 600.00 a year. Large parrots live a long time.
In other words, they are expensive to keep successfully.
If you don't want to put out that kind of money initially, it's really going to hurt you down the road if you don't have the moeny to take care of it.
Please reconsider this and perhaps wait until you are in a better position to handle the annual cost. It's really expensive to do it correctly.

If you know EXACTLY how to chose an excellent quality bird, you can pick one up cheap at an exotic animal auction, depending on who is there and how high of bidders are there. If you don't know what you are doing, you can be end up paying for high quality and getting poor quality. Also, mills and breeders both frequent these places so be VERY careful.
Other places to look are humane societies, sanctuaries and the like who are more worried about finding good homes than money.
Good luck!

Find a bird sanctuary. They are usually almost free, and there are a lot that need a good home.
