With the invasion of India by Mahmud Ghazni about 1000 A.D., began the Muslim invasions into the Indian subcontinent and they lasted for several centuries. The Muslim invasions continued even when the Muslims were ruling India, like the invasion of the Mongols during the reign of the Khiljis or the invasion of the Mughals in the early sixteenth Century when the Lodis were ruling Delhi. The last notable invasion of the Muslims from outside was the invasion of Nadir Shah in 1739, during which he unleashed a great horror on the native population.
During these seven hundred years of Muslim invasions and their conquest and rule of India, the Hindus were the greatest sufferers. It is difficult to estimate the number of Hindus who lost their lives during these campaigns, the number of Hindus who lost their lives in the religious persecution perpetrated on the native population by the Muslim rulers or the number of Hindus who were forcibly converted to Islam.
According to Prof. K.S. Lal, the author of the Growth of Muslim population in India, the Hindu population decreased by 80 million between 1000 AD, the year Mahmud Ghazni invaded India and 1525 AD, a year before the battle of Panipat.
One can safely add another 20 million Hindus to this list to account for the number that were killed during the Mughal rule or the rule of the Muslim rulers in the Deccan plateau. By all known accounts of world history, as pointed out by Koenard Elst in his book the Negationism in India, destruction of about 100 million hindus is perhaps the biggest holocaust in the whole world history.
How are illnesses massacres? That doesn't make sense.
If include the Spanish flu, then AIDS has the highest death toll and it continues to grow. Need I repeat that it's STILL growing. Lifespans have been cut short, and how many children are going to orphaned to left to run African governments? By 2025, there will be over 100 million AFRICAN AIDS-related deaths. http://www.worldrevolution.org/news/article1857.htm We are sitting at over 25 million deaths NOW, not 2-3 million.
A massacre is the planned death of a certain group of people, whether lead by politics, religions, or racial motivations. It is NOT a disease because a disease, unless planted by a government, is NOT malicious on it's own accord.

To me, the word massacre conotes a purposeful action taken by one people against another - usually a military action.
As far as worse, well that is a matter of interpretation. What do you go by? The number of people killed? The demographics? The reason the action was taken? The actions of the acting party prior to the massacre?
Mi Lei (sp?) was bad. One small Vietnamese village and a bunch of tired, scared soldiers with poor leadership. Pol Pots Cambodia and his killing fields. Our bombing of Dresden during WWII - lots of civilian casualties and no military targets, designed to wipe out cultural targets and reduce morale of the German people. Germanys concentration camps - where folks were told they were going into showers and were showered with Zyklon B instead.
All could be considered massacres, and all could, and probably are, considered to be the worst by some individuals.

First you need to define massacre better if you want to include famines. Overall I would say various communist regimes hold the record when added together (Soviets, Comm. Chinese, Vietnam, Cuba, etc.) so I nominate Karl Marx as the biggest exterminator of human life. A real good example of the pen being mightier than the sword---except Marx's followers always picked up the sword.

Actually, probably the collectivization of the former Soviet Union probably tops the list. The number of deaths there far exceeded the deaths of WWII. There were so many millions starved to death that they can't even generate accurate counts. Well in excess of 50 million, perhaps as many as 100 million.

In my opinion, the greatest massacre in history was carried out by the Japanese in World World II and is often called the "Forgotten Holocaust" or Nanjing Massacre (see source for details) Dec 1937-Feb 1938. The reason that this is the greatest is that it was extremely brutal, mostly forgotten and most importantly still denied to have been committed by the Japanese.

The word infamous better describes a massacre, just incase this question concerns your homework or something. Since a massacre is defined as an act or instance of killing or murder the Rape of Nanking would proably be the biggest, with over 300,000 dead in only a few weeks.

The introduction of small pox to the new world (north and south america) by the euroupeans probably killed somewhere in the 20 to 50 million range over a span of 20 years, consider it a tie with Uncle Joe in the U.S.S.R. ?
