WITHOUT doing sit-ups or crunches as they both hurt my back. It needs to be just as intense as these excersizes though.

They're called vacuums.Stand up strait and exhale as hard as you can.Exhaust all of the air that you can.Do one,catch your breath,then do another.Once you've done that 10-15 times just tighten your abdominal muscles as hard as you can for 60-120 seconds.This is called isometric training.It's safe for people with back trouble.Try it before you choose a best answer.
Another thing to remember.You will not burn more fat on your abs by working them.Fat is burned everywhere.Spot reduction is a myth.If you don't believe me,type that into your search engine.
Don't ever use any type of pain killer or work through that type of pain.It hurts for a reason.You'll get hurt even worse.

If it hurts your back do them anyways and one your body gets used to doing them your back wont hurt anymore and untill your back gets used to it take some pain killer for the pain..... you could use some machines in like a gym/weight room 2 for some ab workouts..... I hope this helps....

It all depends on your matbolism. I just did crunches and leg ups, I got a six pac in 2 months.

There is that ab machine where you can just turn it on and eat potato chips at the same time.
