the above answer is right. A catholic who "leaves" the church has never really understood their religion or never studied in full the defences of what it believes. They are also called fallen away catholics. Which still implies they are Catholic, but have wished to leave the church for whatever reason.

Once a catholic, always considered..in some way .. a catholic.

and, no, actually, they arent the biggest religion in the world because being an ex something is not a religion, and i am pretty sure fallen away catholics choose many different types of other beliefs and religions to go to.

No, but since Catholicism is the biggest Christian group in the word, fallen away Catholics should make up a large, but proportionate number, as well.

There is no such thing as an "ex-Catholic". Anyone who leaves the only Church founded by God Himself never really understood what the Church is, and therefore never really belonged to it. Some "nominal Catholics" leave. Real Catholics don't. The million+ adults who joined the Catholic Church during the past year will never leave, because they have taken the time and effort to study the Church before making their decision to come home.
