Unless you work at a suicide hotline, or a hospital...

Unfortunately that is what 'social manners' have deteriorated to.In fact, I have observed the effect of antidepressent so apparent as to be alarming. We are not old nabobs who did not like anybogy to come before them with sad faces. We, as friends, are willingly prepared to share the griefs of a friend or even a fellow passanger for we know we ourselves are not always are not at our best.If I come across a friend who appears to be rather more enthuistic than a situation warrants I endeavour to calm him down by diversion. With bossom friends I even take the rist of asking jokingly if he had had rather an overdose.Though some take offence some actually break down. Perhaps their recourse to anti-depressants is due their inability to face the facts of life but they conveniently forget that the problems are not going to wither away by their ignoring them.I feel we should cultivate social etiquettes which are more realistic.

It would depend entirely on the context. If a person were to be telling you about their failing mental health you could ask if they had seen a doctor or if they were taking any anti depressants. But to come straight out (of seemingly nowhere) and ask would be rude. If you are just asking your question from observations you have made of someone, you best keep that opinion to yourself. Remember that it isn't really your business, but you can show concern for a friend and lend them support and they will be grateful for that.

YEEEEEESSSSS. Good heavens, what are you thinking? It's rude to ask any personal questions. Don't ask women if they are pregnant unless you see said infant emerging from the woman as you speak. Don't ask age. Don't ask weight. Don't inquire about their pharmacutical needs. None of that is any of your business.

I don't think it is anybody's business. A lot of people are touchy about taking them.
However if you think someone should be on them and are wondering if they are, you could just say how much they helped so and so. Just act like you are just talking about someone else and tell them the benifits.

It depends on how close you are to the person you want to ask.
