I almost walked into a massive web between my house and my neighbours, there is nothing connecting the two houses.

Be sure you continue to check this out, but it is my understanding (and I have seen them do it) that spiders send their silk out on the air. They just cast a single strand of silk, or the stuff the web is made of, out onto the air, and wherever the wind carries it, it anchors (attaches), and the spider just uses that as a basis for the upcoming web. I am hoping someone who is in college can give you the name of the spider group that does this, and also some further details to further answer your question with colour and details. Sent to you with good energies from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years old, and will never forget the first wharf spider I ever saw. Gigantic. And lots of them! I was dismantling our wharf up at the lake to bring it in for the season, and when that frame turned upside-down, out came about twenty-five spiders, all headed for me, because I had the dry end, and they were down at the end that was going into the water. I kept perfectly still and they all went scampering past me with not even a nod! Moments to remember. Spiders are incredibly intellligent, by the way. If you bump into one of their webs, they will immediately recraft the entire web so as to avoid stringing any support strands where you can do it twice. I have seen them modify their webs up at camp many times, each time to avoid someone who might be going in and out of an active doorway, for example.)

Spiders do not care about walls. They make webs all over the place outside in the open air. It does not matter if there are walls or not.

"Web" is a sticky surface, think of it like thread spread from one house to the other. It doesn't have to be supported by anything.

They wait for the wind (enough of it here in England anyway) and get blowen over to the other side - thats the truth!

If they can do this in the house where there's no wind.... then you better be careful, 'cause that one can fly.
