Do you have children? Pets? Lots of traffic? Use semi-gloss. It will have somewhat of a shine to it. Not recommended on walls that are less than perfect as it will highlight dents and warps in the wall. Bathrooms, again, semi-gloss. Kitchen. semi-gloss. Basically, I recommend semi-gloss everywhere!

In the kitchen and bath you want to use a gloss paint because of the moisture in the air from cooking and showers. The gloss protects the wall and cleans up easily. The rest of the house should be matte on the walls and semi gloss on the wood work. But if you are going for a faux finish look you need to break the rules. Go to the home improvement store and look at their samples. they all have great ideas and usually lots of pampflets with pretty easy to follow instructions.

It depends on t he indivual and that is why they have all sorts of textures, etc of paints.... I have studied decorating and I firmly believe in certain textures.. these are:
Kitchen: Satin finish latex
bathroom: semi-gloss latex
bedrooms, living, etc: SATIN finish latex
ALSO.. depending on the color.. I ALWAYS paint the ceiling. If the walls are a beige wheat(satin), I paint the ceiling a beige wheat FLAT, etc etc
