Hi,
I remember when I was a child and I had 2 ringworms at the back of the head. My doctor told my parents to have all of my hair shaved off. I was only 4 years old and I cried and cried as one of my Dads friends (a Barber) shaved my beautiful long blonde hair off. As you can tell I have never forgotten that day. Thank god they don't do that sort of thing now.

To treat the ringworm fungus infection you need to keep applying an anti fungal cream. It may be a good idea to trim a small amount of hair away from the infection. But not so much that it's going to be noticed by your child's friends. Especially if your child is a girl, you don't want her to go though the embarrassment like I suffered.

I found one of the best things to use to treat ringworm is to apply Gentian Violet. It's purple in colour and you apply it with a cotton wool bud, the Gentian Violet soaks deep into the skin, then kills the fungus infection and it keeps working for hours, not like the creams that can easily get rubbed off.

Be careful when using it, it can stain your clothes and fingers, but honestly its one of the best things to treat ringworms as well as any other fungal infection.

Below I have given you some sites to look at regarding the use of Gentian Violet and information on ringworms.

It's a fungus, and it needs to be treated daily until about 2 weeks after you can't see it any more. Any anti-fungal cream will work, but prescription fungal creams will work a lot faster. Ketoconazole is what my doctor prescribed for my daughter's ringworm, and it was invisible in a matter of days. I use the remainder on Athlete's foot and it works with one or two applications.

It takes a prescription ointment from a physician and patience and persistence , because it is difficult to get rid of and takes some time but with regular treatment daily it will go away eventually but can take a couple of months at times.

It is a fungus. I agree with the answerer about the Keta.... I understand that is the strongest and most effective anti-fungal available. For prevention, the site www.hufa.org has some info on the fungus (Candida albicans) otherwise known as "yeast".

It may help explain how your child got it, and how to prevent further outbreaks among family. While it is not "contagious", it still can be passed from person to person.

my family once had a cookout using the meat of a freshly killed pig, and then got ringworm from it....we went to Wal-Mart and bought Blue Star Ointment and slathered it all over our "rings". We kept that up until the ring worms died.
