Because in ancient times they were ignorant of science and how things really work. A simple trick looks like a miracle and they were so easily fooled. For the people that say I have never read "The Book" , I have many many times and each time I find so much stupid stuff. Read Leviticus and try to follow those rules. Slavery was OK. Selling your kids was OK. There are two versions of the creation in the Genesis. Read chapter 1 and compare to 2. heck just read anywhere and you can find errors and misconceptions. Amazing what a few magic tricks can do. In today's world people are persuaded but the simple idea if there is a god I don't want to not follow the word but if there isn't a God then what does it hurt? Just open your eyes and contemplate how many millions of people died because of religions.

Gosh what a profound question! Maybe, just maybe, the billions of people who have recognized the value of that silly book know something that you don't know? If a man asked me if I saw the huge hairy beast walking down the street I would think he was nuts, or at least mistaken. But if a hundred people asked me that question, I would logically assume that they had seen something real that I hadn't seen, and I would not be so foolish as to sit there in my ignorance and try to tell them all that their experience was imagined.

Fear of going to hell. It is like those, chain letters. even though how absurd those letters are people just afraid that something bad might happen to them. As you know, fear is one of the effective way to get someones attention and next is reward. Bible promise heaven to nice people. Now, who doesn't want that, right? Childish might it seems, but people truly embraces this as a sacred book. Even though they are fully aware that this book was concacted, written, retranslated, recompiled, republished by many men. That book would be sacred if God himself wrote it but it wasn't. Sadly, many people took the bible literally thats why christians society itself are divided into many sects. One group think Jesus is the God himself, others think its the holy trinity and few say, the father of jesus is the god. You see, this is realy ridiculous. The problem here is, the reading material. It wasn't edited properly.
