i put in new ram each stick on its own starts ok but together I always get this screen and have topress restart, then it loads fine and all ram registers. do I need to change a bios setting my ram is : slot 1 512mb slot 2 256mb

Your two RAM sticks may be rated at different speeds.
The 256MB stick may be slower than the 512. One buffered, the other unbuffered.
