Troops always have. While I was in, we had numerous people go AWOL. They just get noticed more now that we're in a state of war, which also makes it a bigger offense.

So many? Where are your facts to support this statement? There has been since day one some will go awol or desert from the military. The numbers according to the study done by ABC and others is that there are less than Vietnam which had a few and it is less than .0001% of the total in each service.

Just go ahead and say it. You don't think anyone should join the military. Isn't that easier to say than asking all these questions? Why don't you give us some links that say so many people are "quiting" the military? I would like to see some facts and figures.
You know what I think of when I hear someone went AWOL? THEY DON'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES. They should think about these things before they sign up. The military is more than a job.

Most of us only hear horror stories from the war on TV, where they are appropriately watered down. Soldiers who are in the thick of it have to deal every day with the hypocrisy of invading a country and killing its people in order to bring them peace and prosperity. Among those who haven't served overseas, the effect is still present, albeit at a slightly removed stage. Full-time soldiers spend almost all their time with other soldiers, so they get a lot more first-hand reporting on what's really happening than the rest of us. As more and more of the soldiers in the field lose faith in their cause, that loss of faith is transferred to the new recruits. Don't worry, though, eventually the recruiters won't be able to find enough downtrodden ghetto kids to fill body bags, and the government will start conscripting. If I weren't already here, I'd move to Canada...

Probably because they have lost faith in our government and perhaps the cause.
I talked to someone recently who stated that they believed in helping the Iraqi people but it wasn't being handled effectively by our government and military advisors, and many just felt like sitting ducks.. Also, the Military in general is spread too thin. They closed too many bases, pulled the Draft...and all branches of the Military are very selective in who they let in now. Our Military is becoming a Specialized machine.

i am not anti war, anti military, but a country can not send soldiers on repeat tours, one time is ok, but when you keep going over and over, your number is bound to come up. i feel for them, a vet myself, i often thought of the same, each case is different, so, let's not judge all by one, sometimes, just a change of heart will have devasting effectson a person.

Gee, I wonder why they wouldn't want to spent 3/4 of their time in the military in a combat zone and risk getting killed for such a ridiculous cause.

Because they are cowards and don't care about the brave traditions of our country or real men and women who stand up to tyrants.

I have one question....
Where's your proof this is happening??
That's what I thought. You have none. You saw this question asked on here today, so you thought you'd stir the pot. Too bad you don't have any facts to back your stupid question.

That's what happens when people lose faith in their leader, as it has become apparent that he has occupied Iraq for his own vested interests with no real just cause, and that is not worth fighting (and potentially dying) for.
