i have two troublesome kittens and am wanting to keep them in a large cage while i am out of the house so they are safe and dont get into any more trouble. I cannot find a suitable sized "kitten" cage and have been advised that a dog cage is unsuitable for cats - why cant i put them in a dog cage?

The holes in the mesh of a dog box are too large for cats. They can catch their paws, or even their whole heads, in the mesh and injure themselves. Suck it up and buy a cat carrier.

I'm thinking it depends on what kind of dog cage you use. A few things to consider - if it is made of metal or has a metal door, what is the spacing of the grid? Could the kittens get a paw caught in the metal and get hurt? If it is plastic, are the air / view holes too high up for the kittens to see out? That won't hurt them, but they will get bored more quickly.

i don't see why that would be a problem. I will get back to ya once i find a site that says otherwise.

After looking at some yahoo pics comparing cat and dog cages (the mesh one's anyways) i noticed something. The hole on the cages of dogs are bigger than the ones of a cat cage. So i guess it would be considered a safety hazard bc the cat could get stuck while trying to paw it's way out, (as grendle stated below.)

can you not perhaps limit them to one room in the house with water and litter box???? To confine 2 kittens for periods of time will produce very timid and underdeveloped cats.
Please do not do that.
You could get an outdoor "cage" fro tavelling and leave them in there with toys water and food, but please do not confine them to a cage... cats are not "kennel trainable" they need to roam and explore. So the outdoor cage would be best.
But you know what? They WILL grow out of their kitten mischief.
So enjoy them while you can.

I use my dog crate for my kitties when they need to be confined. I bought for my dogs but they don't need it anymore and its the largest they make, I think its like for great danes and mastiffs. I works great for the cats their litter box bed and toys are all in there and they have plenty of room to play also.
