i used to be a cop in a large city in California ~ and I have seen people shot in every part of the human body. When i reflect back on those on-job experiences, it really takes alot to just "brush-it-off" as part of the job.

I am not a police officer but a fireman and I too have seen several suicides by firearm. 20+ fatal car accidents, hangings, drug overdoses a couple murders. Also 3 or 4 suicides by train and I agree with you its hard on you but the worst for me are the ones that involve children. But all of that seems to disappear when i save a life or deliver a baby.

Hope this helps

I responded to or was investigator for 47 homicides. After the first 3 I always made sure that when I left the scene I had a bigburger, extra ketchup. Was able to put the vics down as just more meat. I mean, the person themselves have moved on, just a vessel left behind.

I am a retired deputy sheriff/ deputy coroner. Those things don't go away. You just have to put some distance between you and the experience. I moved from the area that I worked.I then tried to find jobs to keep me busy and that seemed interesting. I found that there are many things just as rewarding as my law enforcement career. I also found that there are good people out there. These new experiences slowly begin to occupy your thoughts. Try it... it helps.

Other people get shot in every part of their body and you're asking if the cops are traumatized? Aren't these the same men and women that take such glee in torturing supposedly free citizens with high-voltage electrical devices for not "obeying" them? The police are the biggest law-breakers in the country.

did you read the introduction to police patrol functions before you became a cop? It is part of the job.
