Most often, airlines keep the same flight numbers for their flights.....

Let's say:......
TWA Flight 472 departs Omaha at 8:37am every day, and flies to San Diego, and then it departs San Diego returning to Omaha as Flight # 1297 at 4:05pm.

You can go to american airlines web site and check for flights from Newark to Atlanta. If you know the approximate time the flight left Newark on Saturday 4/1/06, the flight that leaves at the same time on Saturday 10/7/06 should still have the same flight number.
