Can household 3way switches be used for 12v lighting? I would like to wire 12 volt ceiling/dome lights in cargo area of a van with switches in two locations. Any help or link to a 12v wiring diagram is appreciated.

While you could do that in theory, household switches have limited ability to carry DC current. Although they are rated at 15 amps AC, the DC limit is often as low as 1 amp.

Any switch rated for 10 amp DC service will work. You can get single pole, double throw switches at most auto parts stores or at Radio Shack.

you sure can. Just make sure you check the amp. rating of the switch. Because its made for house voltage is probably is rated for 20A. Make sure and check what your light will draw for current. It will say on the bulb. It would be too hard to explain to you how to wire it so just look online for diagrams you can find them, just search 3 way switches.
