I wanted to hear form families with autistic children. Did you continue to have children after your child was dx? And if so, what was the outcome? Did you have another child with autism?

My brother had four kids, 2 autistic. Arianna was diagnosed just before Dominic was born.

The average couple has a .4% (that's 4 out of 1,000) chance of having a child with some form of autism.

If you and your husband have an autistic child, you have a 6% (that's 6 out of 100) chance.

That's a huge increase, but it is still unkely you two would have an autistic child.

Also, genetics isn't the only factor in autism. If it was, there would be no identical twins with one autistic & one not. The odds of one twin being autistic & one not, is low, about 20%, but that still proves there is another factor, in addition to genetics.

As far as vaccinations:
Inspite of anecdotal stories, at least most of the children with autism, developed autism BEFORE 18 months, when the vaccinations take place. There was a study using home old videos taken at first birthday parties & they were able to identify 90% of the kids with autism. If at 12 months, they were already displaying autistic behaviors, the vaccinations couldn't have caused them.

Another study shows that 20% of the autistic kids develop normally the first year & regress by the 2nd birthday. So it is not impossible that those 20% "got" their autism from the vaccinations. But I think it is unlikely that all of that 20% would have the same cause.

I was already pregnant with my second when we realized my first was autistic. My second is not autistic, and we are getting ready to try for a third. While it is most common to have more then one with autism, it's not a definite.
