Strange people these theists, huh? They believe with all their might in something that they pretty much refuse can interact with them in any tangible way.
This is because god (and all concepts thereof) is/are substitute(s) for admitting, "I'm afraid of the unknown, and the possibility of nothing beyond this life." It's an instantaneous switch that flips inside their heads. As soon as you "divide by zero", the all-purpose answer is "god."
It's really that simple.

I would believe they thought they had a conversation with God. The culture allows this to exist without an emergency hospitalization. (I'm a licensed psychotherapist, so I know whereof I speak.)
What matters most is what message God conveyed. That's where the conversation begins, because from that point forward, you're discussing an issue. If instead you discuss the 'god' element, the conversation will stop.

I talk with God all the time. I don't doubt when other say they hear. I do have issues with those who hear God and aren't questionning their own sanity. My friend and I have a pact. If I ever stop questionning my sanity when I hear God, she is to have me committed.
The issue is, not all of those "voices" are God. Some are evil and leading us astray. Like what is going on at Medjugorje in Croatia. Millions of Christians and New Agers are following what seems to be advice from the Blessed Mother. But the good priests there say it is not her.
It's a HUGE clue for me that the Christians and the New Agers are agreeing on anything. Something just ain't right!

What about the ones who keep talking to God without getting a reply?

I wouldnt believe that they had a conversation but if somebody told me that God spoke to them (as in an emotional connection that you get whith the Lord that you know is true) then I would believe them because God has touched me and spoken to me, just not in a direct manner.

Certainly not. I'd tell the person to see a shrinker! Why should I believe him and open myself up to being imposed upon. In the same vein, I don't believe any of the founders of religions!

I would not believe that they have had a conversation with god as I do not believe that there are any gods. I might be persuaded to believe that they *believe* that they have been speaking to some god or other.

I think that God chooses to speak to certain people to fulfill His purpose, but it's not something you can choose to do. I'm skeptical about people who say God is always talking to them. What purpose is He fulfilling by telling them to buy a red car instead of a black one? Some people just like to call their conscience God.

Paul says to test the spirits against what Jesus and the Prophets said.
So if George says he talked to God, and God told George to kill everyone in the house, I would be very skeptical.
If, on the other hand, George was told by God to preach a message of peace, love, and understanding in the name of Jesus Christ, I would be LESS skeptical.

I would believe them in the same way my daughter says she saw Father Christmas, I would never take that fantasy away from her, so if someone believed they spoke to god then i would accept it. I don't believe in either of them, but i do believe that these beliefs keep impressionable people sane.
