All Muslims believe in Muhammad (s) and believe he was the last and final prophet and messenger.
All Muslims believe in the Bible and Torah (before they were changed).
All Muslims believe in Jesus (as), David (as), Abraham (as)!
If you don't follow these beliefs you don't follow Islam!
I.e Nation of Islam is NOT ISLAM! Elijah Muhammad was not a prophet and his son brought everyone back to mainstream Islam!
Edit: Sorry there are no 72 virgins in the Qur'an. Go back to school and learn something.

If someone doesn't believe that "There is No God, except The Almighty Allah, and Muhammad (PBHU) is His Last Messenger", he is not a Muslim. This is the base of Islam. The person you met in India isn't a Muslim, if he/she doesn't believe in Muhammad (PBUH).
In order to be a Muslim, no one has a requirement to born in some specific family, region, race, country, or any thing. The only thing important is that one believe "There is No God, except The One and Only Almighty Allah, and Muhammad (PBUH) is His Last Messenger." Someone calls it, and we consider him/her as Muslim.

If you're a muslim, you have to believe in Muhammad. Just like if you're a christian, you have to believe in Jesus Christ. And if you're jewish, you have to believe in Moses. Muhammad is the prophet of Islam and for anyone to truly believe in the teachings of Islam, has to believe in its prophet.
Particularly in the case of a muslim convert - one of the first things you have to say and believe in is that "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet."

Anyone can not be a Muslim until he/she declares that no god but Allah and that Muhammed is the messenger and prophet of god (Allah), otherwise he/she is not considered a Muslim

Yes, they believe in him but as a prophet and nothing more. In my opinion, they look to him More then their god-allah because of what he taught about dying for their religion and killing those who believe differently then them. Most importantly, he taught that they would get 72 virgins if they died for their moon god allah.
