If no, then what is a reasonable pay rate that you would commute 100 miles per day for?

What if they were allowing you to work 10 hours a week over time? That would be an extra $255.00 per week. Does that sound like a fair deal?

Unless you really like the job and there is room for advancement, I would think commuting that long is not worth it. Have you thought about moving closer to where work is? The gas and other car expenses incurred is pretty high. Also I don't know if traffic is bad when you commute or if where you live experiences bad weather. All can contribute to a painful commute.
I would try to see if you can maybe work 4 ten hour shifts to cut down on the commute but I don't know what you do either. Is working from home an option? If you think about it, $17.00 an hour is not that much but again I don't know where you live or the cost of living where you are at. But I would hope for a higher salary. Kind of hard to tell you how much because I don't know where you live nor what job you are doing. Maybe you can go to salaries.com or some website that tells you if the pay you are getting is worth it.

It depends where you live.
For me there is no trafic (not like in big cities) to speak of in the city where I work. To travel 100 miles to work it would take you about 2 hours a day. I use to travel for 45 minuets one way, most of the traveling was on the interstate and some back roads. It was a great stress reliever for me. I listen to book on tapes (free from the library) and listen to talk radio. When I got home, work was far from my mind. Going to work I went over what I needed to do to make me more productive. It was not an inconvience, but a blessing.
If you are considering cost only then a formula I made is what it would take to make it work:
A=$/hr you currently make
B=Hrs per day you currently work
Consider the extra gas and wear and tear on the car ($0.30/mile x 100miles = $30gas).
$17 - (((A x 2) + $30gas) divide by B) = C if C>A it is worth it.
Example is that you currently make $9/hr and work 8hrs/day Then:
$17 - ((($9 x 2) + $30) / 8 =C
$17 - ($18 + $30) / 8 = C
$17 - ($48 / 8) = C
$17 - $6 = $11
Since $11 is greater than $9/hr, cost wise take it.
Once again there are many other factors to this such as bennifits (very important), potential advancement, etc...
Good Luck.

if I had a car that could get over 25 mpg highway I would DEFINATELY do it.
I commuted 50 miles (50 there, 50 back) a day, 5 days a week for 8 an hour. it was barely enough to get by on, but DOUBLE that pay, absolutely it would be worth it.
Besides, once you get used to a commute like that, the time passes faster than you would believe.
(if you're talking about 100 miles there, and 100 miles back, then that is definately longer than anything I've done, but if you're talking about 100 round trip (50 there, 50 back), that is exactly what I did for a year, and for 17 an hour (provided you can get 40 hours consistantly) then it is DEFINATELY worth it)
for all of you griping and whining about 50+ per hour, for some of us out there, beggers can't be choosers

100 total miles or 100 each way? I would commute a total of 100 miles a day for $50 an hour. I would take in consideration wear and tear on my body, mind and vehicle.

No. The costs of gas and repairs don't add up. Not-to-mention, the wear and tear on you. I commute 2 hours a day. I spend most of my time on the trains or waiting for trains. I hate my commute. I'm looking for a job closer to home.

When you factor in the cost of fuel, wear and tear on your car and your time, unless there is the potential of a good future at this job, $17.00 isn't really worth it.
