Did the laws change or something?

Nope, the law hasn't change (fingers crossed that it wouldn't happen any time soon).

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.

If you had the gift shipped to one of these states, then a local sales tax will be added.

Best wishes.

I don't order anything from Amazon except an occasional book that I can't find anywhere else. I'm not aware of an internet sales tax, but depending on the locale where the item originated, there is probably a sales tax. Even when I order things from a catalog, there are certain states listed that carry a sales tax which must be included in the price of the item, plus shipping. Amazon probably has a contact phone number or customer service website where you could ask them to explain the internet tax.

Internet sales have always be subject to sales tax. The merchant is not required to collect if they have no presence in the state to which the item is shipped. In this case, the buyer is supposed to pay the state directly.

The law prohibits taxing Internet access, not Internet sales.

This year when I did my taxes & even the year befor I was asked if I bought any thing thru mail etc. & wasn't charged sales tax,if so I was to report it & pay Ohio sales tax That is not fair.. If i went to some other state in my car & didn't pay tax it would be the same difference. Govt. always has its stickey fingers out.

Sales tax is assessed based on the ship-to address and whether Amazon has a physical presense in that state. Everything they sell is actually subject to tax unless you qualify for an exemption allowed by your state. If they don't charge it, you're required to pay it.
