I have just read that smoking pot on a regular basis stops the onset of Altziemers disease and retards the effects after the disease has manifested itself. This seems to be a good reason to prescribe it to all in danger of this horrible disease. Any comments, ideas from all you good people uot there in Yahoo! land?

I used to be a pot head, but stopped as I found that all I did was wander around my flat looking for things I thought I misplaced which were in front of my nose the whole time.

The active ingredient of marijuana could be considerably better at suppressing the abnormal clumping of malformed proteins that is a hallmark of Alzheimer's than any currently approved drugs prescribed for the treatment of the disease.
The researchers looked at THC, the compound inside marijuana responsible for its action on the brain. Computer models suggested THC might inhibit an enzyme with the tongue-twisting name of acetylcholinesterase (also called AChE) that is linked with Alzheimer's.
AChE is known to help accelerate the formation of abnormal protein clumps in the brain known as amyloid plaques during Alzheimer's. This enzyme also helps break down the brain chemical acetylcholine, which is linked to memory and learning. Acetylcholine levels are reduced during Alzheimer's.
However, marijuana is not necessarily good for the mind. Prior investigations have shown that years of heavy marijuana use, consisting of four or more joints a week, can impair memory, decision making, and the ability to pay attention to more than one thing at a time.
I'm all for medical marijuana!!

I cannot see how this would be so, for a kick off I can never remember where I put my cigarettes!
No, I know, should not joke about stuff like this, have one one in the family with it! What I have read is that aluminium is one culprit for Altziemers, so have tipped all my cooking pots out with aluminium
nium, also it crops up in stuff like under arm deodorants for goodness sakes! Wonder if there is a chemical in cigarettes that helps, but I find it very hard to believe.

Wait a minute - a drug that causes irreparable damage to your short term memory is good at stopping the onset of a disease that causes permanent loss of memory in general?
Somehow, I am highly skeptical.
More likely, by reducing the actual efficiency of the brain, it probably makes alzheimer's harder to detect. You're already so screwed up that the early stages of Alzheimers just dont matter....

It might be a "crock of _ _ _ _", but who would have ever guessed that mold would become the most vastly used form of antibiotic available? If it really does work, not saying that it does or doesn't, but if it does work... Give it to them. After you watch someone that you love go through the stages of Alzheimer's, your only hope is that noone else has to ever go through it. If it is only available by a prescription, then it would be no different than a prescription of pain medication.

I think some serious trials should take place before they start giving it out as standard prescription drug for this condition. They should not be pressured to allow the use of dope based on hearsay.

i love dope ive got an excuse now incase my mum catches me. but i would have thought it would cause stuff like alzheimers cos it kills brain cells. well anyway it makes me happy if i pace myself doesnt seem to be making a retard of me so its all good. LEGALIZE IT

yes you could be rite.but what about all the other effects the drug cause's schizophrenia,paranoid,depression trust me iv been there that is what long term use of dope dose to you that is why it is banned and that is why it will stay banned

this is crap smoking dope is one of the main causes in mental health issues in young people it causes paranoia as well as triggering schizophrenia its just people trying to justify the use of it
