Orange is a secondary color, therefore another secondary color would be best.
You could look at turquoise if you want color,
as an accent to a burnt umber background as the major part of the rug.
this is an area that is used a lot i am guessing, so stay away from white, although that would be beautiful but not practical

I would definitely use a burgundy rug. That would look excellent! Why don't you use clothing to help you decide? Lay a piece of clothing on the floor to see if you like that color in that spot. Just repeat until a certain color of clothing seems to "fit'.

Well, most area rugs are multi-colored. But, www.behr.com has a really neat color finding tool.
Among their selections:
A dark green called Burnished Bronze;
A soft peach called Marmalade;
A bright blue called Royal Peacock;
A rich purple called (oddly enough) Hot Pink;
Another green called Treasure Isle;
A dark red called Poinsettia;
A light blue called Blue Fox;
A light purple called Iris Pink;
A light green called Marina Isle.
You can see lots of traditional and contemporary combinations here. www.rugsdirect.com carries thousands of rugs, and you may be able to find the perfect rug containing one or several of these contrasting colors.

A lighter complementary green color--keep it lighter because darker colors show every speck of dirt. As it's in the entryway, if you can find one that you can pick up and shake out, that will save on daily maintenance.

Depending on what look you're going for a dark rich chocolate is really hot right now , sage green,or dark beige.Since it's your front door you might want to go with a slightly darker color because of the potential for dirt to get tracked in.

I agree with LovesL- either a dark chocolate brown (more elegant) or a lime green (bright and contemporary).
