It's about a half hour walk.....walk up 7th ave to 42nd st. (Times Square)..go right on 42nd.....Grand central is on your left about a mile down....
If you're sightseeing, walk...if not take a taxi.....you say "we" so I assume you're not alone.....the cab is the same no matter how many....probably cheaper than the subway...at least more comfortable

Best way: walk underground from Penn Station to Times Square where you can pick up the "S" (grey) train.
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm
If you have a lot of luggage and don't want to make that hike, you can take the "E" (blue) from Penn Station to the 51st Street/Lexington Ave stop, then take a "6" train (green) down to Penn station.
Both will cost $2 per person for the whole trip.
The walk will take 30 minutes or so. If you don't have a lot of stuff to carry and want to see some of New York, it's not bad. You'll be coming out of Penn Station on 32nd street and 7th avenue. Walk north to 42nd street and make a right. You'll walk through Times Sq. then some of midtown, before you hit Grand Central which is also on 42nd.

Well u need to get over to the east side. To do that by subway, take the 1,2,3,A,C, or E train from Penn Station to 42nd Times Square (that's in the UPTOWN direction). Follow sign to shuttle and take the Shuttle (S) train from Times Sq to Grand Central Station.

Take the 1 or 9 train to 42nd Street times square (uptown). Then transfer to the shuttle subway ("s" as it appears in the subway). The shuttle takes you directly to Grand Central (the sole purpose of the shuttle is to go back and forth between Grand Central and Times Square). Get out, and voila, you've arrived.

The quickest is by taxi hail a yellow cab don't act like a foreigner
JUST WAVE TO HAIL, JUMP IN THE CAB AND SAY VANDERBILT AND GRAND STATION if he questions you then watch out for your money. But it is the best way to go.
