If were running in a race and passed 2nd place (meaning I was 3rd) I would not be in first place until I passed the person in 1st place. I would now take over 2nd place.

Well that question was in the AARP newspaper I received today so I am wondering are you a senior citizen? Or is that just so much coincendence to see the same riddle in two different venues within 2 hours?
You would be in 2nd place if you were going forward. If you were going backward you would be in 2nd place also
