He's very old at 18. He is probably getting incontinent. I don't think you can 'stop' him since it's probably not anything he can do anything about.

Discuss it with a vet. Cats are unlikely to appreciate wearing diapers.

Cats will do this for many reasons.

Just to name a few:
Litter box not cleaned regularly
Not enough litter boxes for number of cats in the home
The litter box has been moved
A change in his surrounding (e.g. moving, someone leaving, another cat introduced, a person being gone more than before, etc.)
Change in diet
Illness

If there is not one of the above things besides illness evident. I would take him to the vet. They will do this if they have a bladder infection, or an illness. And with him being 18 years old, it's possible to have a problem like that. But if he has a clean bill of health you might just have to find a repellant spray and spray it in the areas he does it most. I am betting it is for one of those reasons. Also look on pet sites, they might give you a few more reasons why they could be doing this. All you have to do is google "cat-wetting" and you should be able to find more info. I hope this helps.

My cat is about 17 years old... the thing that makes him " spray in the house" even though hes been fixed for years is, oddly enough, the scent of vanilla... YEP!
I dont know what they put in the vanilla air fresheners but it makes my male cats go crazy and they start marking everything in the house!!... and once that starts, it hard to get them to stop because they will go in the same place all the time.. cat urine is hard to get out .. Good luck...

He may not be able to get to the litterbox in time if he's slowing down or he could be sick. If there's a particular area he favors, put an extra litterbox there and see if he'll use it, and take him to the vet - my friend had a cat that was doing that, and it was because he had a nasty urinary tract infection and bladder stones! Once he was cured, he went back to using his litter box.

I have a 22 yr old cat who drinks tons of water and always uses a litterbox. She does not always get IN it so I put pads of newspapers around the boxes which makes it easier to clean up.

I know she does not have urinary issues and I think you really must have a workup on your "old man" to rule out the possibility that it is painful for him to urinate. I would have boxes for him to use in many places in the house too.

It may be time to put him to sleep, my female cat did the same thing at 18, but she was getting lost in the house and couldn't find the litter box. The smell of cat urine is murder to get rid of.

If he were my cat I would cut him off of sex for a month. He should get back to his routine of going out side again.Or give him that bladder control medicine every 8 hours.Naw!He`s braking down ,enjoy him while you can and make his last days enjoyable for him.

Have you taken the cat to a vet? I'll bet the vet would tell you the cat is very old and incontinent. It's not the cat's fault; its just oooold.

Older cats are very succeptible to urinary tract infections, however altheimers and other mental conditions can impair their memory of where their litter box is. Renal and kidney failure are also causes of incontinece. Take your kitty to the vet for a geriatric blood profile and a physical exam to rule out life threatening disease.

i think it probably has something to do with his old age maybe get him into a room without carpeting and use some newspapers down on the floor but make him a comfy spot as well so he has a nice place to lay
