My son is almost 12 and acts like he is going to die whenever I try to get him to take a pill. Any suggestions?

Good question! But I have found the answer. I am 34 years old and was ridiculed during nursing school, because I too have a hard time swallowing a pill. I now take them with a grape. Just have him eat something (anything) and after he has it chewed up, pop the pill in just before swallowing. In the hospital, I would crush my patients pills and put them in applesauce. But, try not to do this if you really don't know the medication. As some pills are time released and should not be crushed.Hope this helps:)

I just started swallowing whole pills this year at 26 lol So I feel his pain! For me, it was very scary! I got around it by chopping pills up, disolving pills, getting liquid everything, etc. I think I finally just gave up and 'went for it' because I got so tired of doing that stuff. I find sticking the pill on the very back of my tongue, taking water, drinking and swallowing really really fast helped me. Now I can do it with any size pill, no problem. The worst was people making fun of me, pressuring me, watching me, etc. Give your child time, he'll do it eventually, on his own time. Good luck.

Tell them that pretend it is a piece of gum. If that does not work, just put into a old fashioned grinder i am not sure how to call them the ones with the little hammer and bowl. Anyway I have a14 year that still has problems swallowing pills and i crush them for her and put them in a little pudding, ice cream, applesauce what ever child likes. After all that is how they give medication to those that have difficulty swallowing there is nothing work with it and the medication still gets into system.

I had to take meds when I was younger than your son, the way I was taught (and still do it) is put some water(or whatever drink you are uses) in your mouth then put the pill in and swallow and take another drink right after. Does the trick for me and I always had trouble swallowing pills.

I didn't know how to do it until I was 14..it sucked! Just have him stick out his tongue, but it as far back as it will go, take a drink, and lean back and swallow. Everyone has their own technique of doing it though. For some reason I always put my hand on top of my head while swallowing (I don't know where that came from, I just did it the first time and do it every time now). Good luck!

in the process the fall and spring--the undesirable allergy seasons--my dad continually had a similar difficulty. For some reason while the sinuses have been undesirable and he replaced into all dried out from decongestants and antihistamines it replaced into complicated to swallow super pills. We was amused by using this, yet he could take chewable kiddie supplements alongside with us, basically he could take 2 of them. For fish oil pills, shop around for the decrease dose ones which could be smaller in length, exceptionally in the event that they have the "enteric coating" which protecs the tummy. they seem to slip down a sprint much less stressful.

for kids they think its really to hard to take a pill. well just try to convinced him that its better to take pills than tasting the syrup w/c is somtimes very bitter. Try to ask him to take the pill and swallow a bulk of water and let him imagine the pill is swimming inside and ask him to engulp all of it right away. AM sure the pill will be taken in already. Its also much better f you ask him to take the pill with juice rather tahn plain water.

I was scared of swallowing pills when I was a kid, but then I reasoned that I swallowed peas whole sometimes, and most pills weren't bigger than that. I practiced with peas for a little while longer, then moved on to pills!

Don't hold his nose. My Mom did that, and I spit water/pill everywhere.

Give them like a smartie or a tictac a really small piece of candy. a friend of mine is going into the hospital for pill therapy and there going to teach her how to swallow a pill. that will help but i dont know if you want to take it that far

You can't teach them, as he is 12 he should be OK with them but you could try coaxing him with a reward for swallowing it,but only do it the once,if that fails try crushing it up with some jam or whatever but he will grow out of it at some point, good luck
