I want to read Plato's Republic but there are all those translations. How do you know which one is right? Here are a few on Amazon. But then there are early English versions like Sydenham's. I'm so confused.

Indeed, I'm spoofing the standard "which Bible translation..." problem (which isn't really a problem).

Fireball 226 (above): sure it is. Just substitute "Bible" for "Plato's Republic". If viewed as a religious question, it is very similar to one I posed a while ago

Any time there is a translation from one language to another, you will have errors and choices of which word best fits.
You say, "There is snow on the ground." The inuit looks at you and asks, "Oh, do you mean 'itsa' or 'kitsa' or 'nitsa' or 'anook' or ..." (I'm making these up, I wish I knew inuit). Inuit has over 100 words for snow.
The amazon tribal man looks at you and says, "Uhhhh... what is 'snow'?"
Read two or more translations side by side so that you can see the original through multiple eyes. For example, if you should choose to read the Quran, there are three primarily accepted english interpretations (only the Arabic is considered correct, translations are immediately considered flawed, even if useful). Read all three of them side by side. This way you see the original text through the eyes of the three translators.

The KING JAMES VERSION, BECAUSE IT IS THE AUTHORIZED VERSION, be very very careful if you read another translation. Some translations have taken out the power scripture which include the blood and FASTING.

suggest you read them all and then compare. the translations which are the closest in agreeing are probably the more accurate.
