or does it infringe a copyright law

if you use images of artists without their permission you are breaking the copyright law. You can not make copies of work without the artist permission. The only pictures you can copy is if they are in the public domain. It is the same with music , you are not allowed by law to copy music and give it away to friends, but a lot of people do it. Thought it does not mnake it right.
good luck

That would be copyright infringement. The only way you can legally paint someone's design on a greeting card is with their permission. When you buy art, whether it is a card or a CD or a movie, you are actually only licensing the art; you don't really own it, you are merely licensing it for your own personal viewing or hearing. the artist retains the copyright, which mean only he/she has the right to copy, unless they assign that right to someone else.

You CAN paint em, sure. And as the other answerers have said..you just can't sell em.
There ARE exceptions to copyright rules...
One, the government can do whatever it wants with anything, regardless.
Two, you can work from someone elses work for two reasons:
Teaching purposes...and for your own portfolio. Again, you cannot sell them without reprocussions.

Although it seems like a good idea to use such works as reference, it's always a good idea - whenever possible - to shoot your own.

It would only be illegal if you were painting them to sell.

You will have your own interpretation, your own style of painting- it's fine. Just don't try to SELL someone's idea as your own.
