Communication and education. There needs to be communication between parents, teachers and kids. We need to educate parents on how to raise children that don't resort to violence. Education needs to include how to look for signs of stress, depression and mental illness. Teachers and school officials need to be educated on creating healthy environment for children to be in. Parents and educators need to be educated in crisis intervention. AND the communication is vital between all three. We are failing our kids and we need to take an active role in making our world a safer, healthier place for them to grow up!!!

I think one thing that can be done is to stop making a big deal out of every shooting in the news. That may influence people to do something like that.

In spite of the recent shootings school violence has declined over the past 10 years or so.

We need to curb the amount of violence children are being desensitized to in the media, as well as video games - and perhaps lock-downs in the schools (making it more difficult to enter).

We cannot. If someone, crazy enough, wants to do something crazy, there is no way to know in advance. So there is no way of stopping him.
Hundreds of thousands of military, police, government officials in Iraq are trying every day to stop the violence and have only limited success.
