They see everyone else doing it and talking about it - especially on TV. They don't have the same perception of their age as we adults do - they think they are mega-grownup already!
Actually kids of that age have always started exploring relationships and kissing and stuff (and the rest, lol) - they just used to be shyer about it!
I think that it's still not a too 'serious' thing but it's sad, sometimes, that they seem to take on all the troubles and agonies of the 'dating game' far too young, simply because everywhere they look their idols (or, rather, the press) are making a big thing about which star is going out with who and who has got divorced.
Kids are just much more clued up about sex than they used to be.

believe it or not that is so right. my boyfriends son is in 3rd grade and has a gf in 4th grade. I don't agree with it at all!! but for some reason his mother and father think it is just fine. This kid is very smart but I don't think its okay for a kid in 3rd grade to start dating. what do you do? I don't know because I tke care of the kids every other month and can't say anything, but I guess if that kid starts having sex really early it probably will have nothing to do with being allowed to date at such an early age. I will take care of his son but I will not take care of a baby when he is in his early teens. Mom and pops will be doing that. So tell me about it. It makes me sick! I have 2 girls and they both are not allowed to start dating until I say it is alright. If they are seeing someone anyway in school I guess there is not much you can do but you definitley don't have to make it easy for them. Bad judgement is what I call it. On a parents part.

I wonder the same thing. Sometimes it's the parents. Like my sister-in-law tells me about my 7 yr.old niece playing house and having a bf. What does she know about a bf?? And why is it a bf and not a husband.
Sometimes it is society making a relationship seem like it's a way to live. For acceptance you need to be a relationship and sometimes it depends on where a child is coming from. Maybe to a child that young, such as my niece and the children you saw, are only thinking friendship wise and not relationship. I mean how does a 10 yr. know anything about being a relationship, other then the physical? And only physical because of what they see and hear. From us, the adults that allow certain things to play within our own home.
I don't think it's right to look down at the children but to look down upon ourselves for allowing such things to happen to the innocent. We have allowed society to tell us what kind of music we are going to like and what shows we will like. Grant it, it is the parents responsibilities, but us as the "in" crowd. What part do we play in what society is dishing out, and when is enough enough??? Sara.

I often wonder the same thing. My mom works at an elementary school and some kids in the upper grades are already having sex...hmm...I'm in college, been with my man for several years now and I haven't even had sex. What happened to waiting for your honeymoon people? Someone needs to re-invent cooties at the elementary school or our teen pregnancy rate is going to sky rocket!

It's just all around them and they think, "Hey. The world is saying it's okay. So...I mean come on." It's so rediculous and it's just so pointless. The reason to date is to fine the person you're gonna marry. You're not gonna get married any time soon in those grade levels. Plus, people change.

Because we live in a fast world. Kids are growing fast and parents cant control them or just dont want to put the effort to place rules, boundaries and limitations to their kids. Some parents think its cute for their kids to have boyfriends/girlfriends at a early age. Glad I dont have kids.

Security. It also makes them feel like they're special. It could also be that they just want to be more...grown up? I suppose. I asked my cousin this awhile ago. She said that she couldn't wait to grow up. I just shook my head and said that she should wait..though she now has a boyfriend! She's 10 by the way. I think that they just want to grow up too fast.
