How far apart are Australia, New Zealand and Fiji?
It seems from the map they are all somewhat near one another.
Is it unrealistic to try and visit all three in one trip?
If that is do-able, how long would you recommend?
Three weeks? One month?

thank you.

It really depends on how old you are, what things you enjoy doing, how long you like to spend to take a place in, and how much money you have to spend. You can get a flight to New Zealand that lays over in Fiji (if I recall correctly it is a 3-hour flight to NZ from Fiji) and just ask for an extended layover (like 3-days or so). Of the 3, New Zealand has the most to do and should be allotted the most time. Oz is much bigger but mostly desert whereas NZ is chockers full of stuff. I've had this exact discussion with many backpackers and the general consensus is 1-week for Oz and 3-weeks for NZ to do it right. If you have more than a month I would say 2-weeks in Oz. Also, if you aren't into adventure activities like diving, caving, hiking, parasailing, bungee, etc then NZ will take less time. It is not unrealistic to visit all 3 in a month but you will need to have a schedule.

I just came back from a 2 month trip...one month each in Australia and New Zealand. It was wonderful, but much much too short. I would have loved to have had more time, especially in Australia....it's as big as the US, and you couldn't ever see the US in a month either. My advice is if you only have a month, plan a trip fo New Zealand...it's smaller, so it's easier to see in a shorter time, and it's just incredibly beautiful. Of course, if you're a diver or snorkeler...plan a week at least on the Great Barrier week, and then at least a week in Sydney and another in Melbourne. The trick is to think carefully about what you're interested in, and do research to see which place has those things. And remember their seasons are the reverse of the US, so while we're starting Fall, they're starting Spring.
Wherever you go, have a great time!

In my opinion it is doable, but if you have only three weeks or one month very stressful and i do not think that you would have the time to enjoy the impressions of this three parts.
I had four weeks and only saw a part of queensland in australia and it was to short :)

If you only want to say, i was there! then it is enough time.

Like one said it depends on what you want to see, how much you want to see and do.
If you are lucky try to spend at least threes month. I think, then you could visit a lot of interesting places in all three destinations.

i am planning to go back to australia next year for 2 or 3 month, and while i am planning my route i recognize that it is a really short time at all:)

have fun!

one week - Fiji, 2 nights Nandi, 3 Suva, 2 a resort (example only)
3 - 4 wks - New Zealand
4 - 5 wks - Australia
with good planning the above should easily be adequate.
Aus. is very large, budget needs to allow for travel expenses.

Lots of backpackers do all 3 in 1 trip. I spent 4 month in oz and hardly saw half of it. Mind you i was in the boozer quite alot. Try and stay for as long as possible. There all wonderful countries.

The rest of your life, if you're lucky. It is my strong impression that region of the world is about the most desirable outside my own, central California.
