They don't. You can do whatever you want.

However, the tradition may have started when the original purpose of a bridesmaid was to distract demons from trying to steal away the bride. They were utilized as decoys to keep jealous spirits away from the bride.

They don't. I don't know where it started unless some diva a long time ago had bridesmaids wear the same dress and everyone thought it was a great idea. If I ever get married (again) and have a wedding, I am definately having my girls wear different dresses.

hi :) they do not have to be the same colour but it is nice if they are :) its sometimes nice for the older bridesmaids to have a different style to the smaller brides maids but they both should have the same colours in for egsample the older could have gold and the younger could have ivory and gold if you understand that lol. i get married in 2 weeks and i only have 1 bridesmaid and 1 pageboy and my bridesmaid is wearing ruby red and my page boy and the rest of the men are wearing ruby red cravets:)

I think it's a matter of taste and to have a uniformed look
I mean you want everyone to know right off that the bridesmaids and groomsmen are just that

So no one stands out. The focus is not supposed to be on the bridesmaids, it's on the bride. So if they all had different dresses it would stand out and draw attention.

actually they don't have to be the same..they can me whatever you want them to be..i seen a "rainbow" wedding before when all the bridemades had on different color gowns..it was really nice to my suprise..peach, lavender, baby blue, and pink.(doesn't sound very nice, but trust me it's nicer than it sounds) and the decorations were all those colors..i guess it's because the bride wants to stand out that maybe if everyone in the wedding party has on the same dress, then maybe she'll stand out more..who knows..

I think it's just to separate the Bride from the rest of the pack.

So nothing distracts from the bride. All eyes should be on HER and not looking at alot of other outfits.

I don't think they have to be identical anymore. To answer your question on where did this originate from, i would reccomend reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridesmaid
