I spent two weeks vacationing in the area around Tahiti about 15 months ago and the water is beautiful, but I would not want to live there for a long time, unless I was independently wealthy and could travel frequently to places with a little more variety in terrain, people, weather, economy, etc and with more space. Also, there could be problems on a long-term or more permanent basis with day-to-day interactions with people and government in essentially a French colony.

I'd like to visit there again, though I'm not sure I'd like to live there. I was supposed to go to Bora Bora once and they cancelled my flight cause of the riots in Papeete. They were protesting the nuclear weapons testing by the French.
