Wow, it is sad to see how few know about their period. At 13, I hardly expect you to know that much, but for the 20-somethings no to know..its a shame.
OK, the answer to your question:
Your body prepares for ovulation by generating a blood-rich wall lining in your uterous. The egg comes into the uterous and either attached to the wall (you're pregnant) or does not attach (not pregnant).
When the egg does not attach, hormones are release, signaling the uterous to discard the wall lining. This is the "begining" of your period where you feel the bloating, nausia, etc associated with having a period.
The blood-rich uterine wall lining detaches from the uterous and is discarded through the vagina = bleeding.
The dark material you are seeing is (drum roll) tissue from the wall of the uterous that has clumped together. It is very rich in minerals that a fetus would need and has a darker color
It is not "old blood" or "left over".
There is no such thing as "old blood". Don't believe me? Prick your finger and watch the drop of blood, in about an hour, it drys and solidifies. It does not go dark. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ. There is no way blood would not be vacated. Thats why some "spot" after their period. The vagaina is "cleaning"
The time when "aunt flo" comes to visit will at times vary. It is not unsualy to have your period a little sooner or later from time to time.
The dark matter is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. If you have more questions, see your doctor if you are not confortable talking to a femal relative.

Normally your periods don't come out "dark brown almost black". That sounds like a very bad discharge. You may want to see your GYN (gynocologist) just as a precaution. There is nothing to be afraid of. While you're there, discuss your body and what you may or may not understand with your doctor. Street advice is not always the best advice. Your parent(s) should be taking you to get yearly pap smears as well.
Speak with your mother about this situation (or ask her to make a doctor's appt for you).

Yeah, it can be dark brown and black, that's how blood is. Periods aren't always regular or normal. There's really no such thing as a normal period, and even with the same person it can change all the time. Nothing's wrong with you, it's perfectly normal.

Its definatly your period. If you experience heavy bleeding for more than 8 days and or a strong foul odor. I mean strong enough to gag a maggot strong then I would see the OBGYN just to make sure everything is in order. You can never be too safe.
Other than that I think that you are perfectly fine.

It sounds like your period. Mine does that sometimes...so don't worry. Your period can start early...and sometimes late. Sometimes it will be dark...sometimes red....sometimes brown...sometimes dark brown. There isn't anything wrong with you..you are normal. Don't worry. Try not to compare yourself to others too too much though..because we are all different.

Hi. I'm 24... I usually have that color of discharge come out about a week before my period comes. Your period should be bright red.

Sometimes period starts black--think it's cause it's old blood. It will probably be brighter color in few hrs or tomorrow. Not to worry.

I believe it is normally, but for reasurrance I would talk to your mom about it.
I know that my mom never told me anything about it. One day I woke up had blood down there and went crying to her telling her I had to go to the hospital because I was bleeding. Everytime something new happened I had to talk to her because I didn't know, because she didn't like to talk about it.
But in the end I got the best advice from my mom and if she didn't know she called the gyn for me. (Which saved me the embassed feeling)
