Malamutes (and Siberian Huskies) aren't protective in the slightest. They were bred to be friendly to everyone!
Most dogs do OK in Alaska (I've lived there for most of my life). No dog should be an exclusive outdoor dog; I'm hoping that you are planning to make this dog a part of your life by bringing it inside; in which case the ability of the dog to withstand cold matters even less. German Shepherds are noted to be protective (mine was) but be sure to purchase one from a good breeder, or else you might wind up with an aggressive or neurotic one. You also might consider a Rotweiller or Belgian Malinois, or Dutch Shepherd (again, make sure you get one from a good breeder).
If you are looking for more of a watchdog (that will sound the alarm but not bite) you might want to look into the Shetland Sheepdog, Collie, or Giant Schnauzer.
Hope this helps!

This page on the Alaskan Malamute Club of America's website lists a couple of people you might contact:
http://www.alaskanmalamute.org/amca/Areas/pnw.asp
You can also try the Alaskan Malamute Club of Canada's breeder referral:

Doubt you'll find a Malamute in most Alaskan sled dog yards. ;-) Maybe 100 years ago, but not anymore.
More info on the breed:

Good luck!
ADDED: Call me persnickety, but Susannah H needs to know that the *Siberian* Husky (the breed most people mean when they refer to a "husky") is NOT "indigenous" to Alaska. *cough* Sheesh!

I have an older Malamute female and she is wonderful. I got her from a friend of mine, who got her from a friend, but my point is that i have been typing in Malamute on the net and found tons of places to adopt one for $ for one younger than 7 and $75 for one over that age.

Research your breed choice carefully (sounds like you're on the right track) and take all attributes of the breed into consideration. How willing are you to groom and groom and groom? The akc website has a great questionaire on "the breed for you" to match your personality with a breed.

i'd google some breeders up your way. i'd also check with the local vet, they would know of a breeder that would have some good dogs for sale.

Malamutes are not known to be loud. What about a Husky? They have lots of energy, bark a lot, and are indiginous to the region.
