Because the people that name things were trying to be funny or something.I consider these names to be ridiculous. There are many more of these word idiocies.

That's something to ponder...
I'm a Southern Californian who has always driven on the freeway.
While on the east coast, when I said I took the freeway to get to some location, these east coasters looked at me like I was from some other planet...
I have discovered there is NO FREEWAY here, a beltway, an inner loop, an outer loop, an expressway, but no freeway...
