Most disability payments are the result if disability insurance which your or your employer pays a premium. They and SSI are exempt from income tax. If you or your spouse has other income you will still be required to pay tax if it exceeds the amounts necessary to file a return.

I'd be surprised if you didn't have to pay taxes on it. Uncle Sam isn't going to give away money without getting a piece of the action first.

Government Disability, I do not know.

Private disability where the employee pays the premium, no.

If the coverage is free or paid by the employer, yes.
