Good God! Do you expect us to make sense of what you typed? There have been 5-10 questions here about insurance rating. Insurance companies insure too many people to a rate for each kind of person in the world. And since everyone is paying into one "pool" when paying the premium, and that pool is used to pay for claims, the best data and statistics that they can use to determine rates is age, experience, sex, marital status, credit, vehicle type, etc.
The chocolate bar is going right into your stomach. You don't drive the chocolate bar down the road and hit another chocolate bar in the rear because you're 16, a male, and don't know how to keep a safe following distance. There's no chance that the convenience store, as a result of you consuming the chocolate bar will have to pay more. The chocolate bar can't hurt someone.
So your comparison doesn't really work. If you're selling a product to someone and as a result may have a higher risk of having to pay someone else a lot of money due to the buyer's negligence you should be able to collect more money from that person if you know he has a higher chance of having an accident and causing damage.
Essentially, when you pass your driving test, assuming you're 16, you basically are paying as much as the others that have just passed because you're all young and inexperienced. It's just that statistically boys have more accidents. It's not discrimination. The state insurance departments approve the rating systems that insurance companies use.
Enough already with the discrimination complaints!

Insurance companies can't discriminate. It is against the law. You aren't buying a chocolate bar, made of quantifable parts, of a definite size, and easily replaceable.
When you are buying insurance, you are buying protection for yourself and your property in the event of the worst case scenario. The prices are determined by statistical factors based on people like you, who live in your area, and drive the same kind of car you do. How much coverage you need / choose will determine your price. Bad things can happen fast and not far from your home or work when you least expect it. Insurance is protection from financial ruin or susbstantial loss. Stats help set the price, not your personal trustworthiness.
By the way, dublover, I have a dub, too, and no, it's not the cheapest to insure.

The reason why insurance companies make certain age groups pay certain prices is because of statistics which show that males 16-25 are more likely to get involved in a car accident then any other age and gender group. Think about it teenagers are very distracted while driving, like listening to loud music, watching the cute boy or girl on the curb, and trying to show off for friends. But as you mature you honestly become a safer driver. You wouldn't see a 65 year old bumping loud music and trying to show off for friends or smiling at a cute boy or girl on the curb side.

Insurance is a PRIVATE industry and they can submit any underwriting guidelines to the state insurance board for approval they see fit. There are stats that back-up their claims that young male drivers have a greater number and more severe collisions than women. Fair has nothing to do with ratings, it is a matter of the law of large numbers.
Deal with it.

whilst i agree with your argument whiterose i think it is worth noting also that older drivers are more likely to have declining vision and whilst many will i am sure have this checked and sorted it is safe to assume that for some this will have been so gradual that they may not even have noticed it happening. surely this should concern insurers too and they should either make it a condition to have a sight test or increase the premiums in line with the increased risk

It's simple, Sheila's Wheels announces it to the public. "For ladies WHO insure their cars" etc... The majority of young girls are in crap jobs and can't afford insurance, therefore they go on their daddy's insurance as named drivers. Thus when they inevitably mash the car up, it's daddy's premium that goes up! And of course, another male that has had an accident!
Women are NOT safer drivers, just sly insurers!
Sorry, had to get that off my chest!
In response to your question, I totally agree! As a smoker my bug-bear is that smokers are treated as second-class citizens by the NHS. We PAY for the NHS!!! Without us income tax would go up by about twenty per-cent! Why aren't fat people subject to a fat-tax? Smokers pay for the NHS, but get no help from it. Fat people pay no tax on their cheeseburgers but get fast-tracked for liposuction!
I'm not saying that smokers or fat people are good, but a bit of equality in this "Equal" society would be good!
Rant over!
