It can, but as with everything else, if you eat it in moderation, it'll be fine. I'm Asian and eat rice everyday. I have never had a weight problem.

I am NOT one of those lucky few who can eat and eat and never gain weight. I just don't over indulge.

No, rice itself will not make you fat. Any weight managment is just about Calories In Vs. Calories Out. So really, the only thing that is going to make you "fat" is comsuming more calories than you burn. Rice is pretty much just a carbohydrate that is good to eat in moderation, just like any other kind of food. Any negative feedback about rice could have been because it's a carbohydrate and thanks to Mr. Atkins our society primarily views carbs as bad, but in reality they're not at all, they're you bodys' prime fuel source and are required for energy!

Rice is a staple food for 2/3 of the Earth. Most people are not nearly as fat as Americans.

Also consider Japan. They eat a ton of it, and except for their sumo stock, are among the thinnest people on the planet not in a 3rd world. Also, consider that sumos get most of their calories from rice.

So, it depends on how much you eat vs. how much you move. Just like with anything else.

Yes. Rice definitely makes you fat because of the presence of Starchy content and carbohydrate.
However, if an individual does exercise regularly, then the Carbohydrates are transformed into proteins. And the starch is burnt out.

Generally, no - not more than any other food. Not all rice is created equal though. Whole grain rice is much better for you than the processed white rice because it has more fiber.

Rice doesn't have much protein...starch and protein are totally different things - I don't know what that one guy was talking about.

Anything can make you fat if you eat too much of it. Burt Wolf said it best - There are no good foods and no bad foods, only appropriate amounts.

One cup of cooked rice has more points in Weight Watchers than one cup of cooked potatoes. Obviously this doesn't include any sort of topping for either.

Too much of anything can make you fat. No food can make you fat unless you eat it a lot. And it also depends on what you put on the rice, like soy sauce can make your calories sky rocket.
