That is why I am a stay at home mom, I wouldn't tarde it for te world. When I was preg. w/ my daughter we reserched day cares I would drop her off my husband would pick her up, so it needed to be close to our home. And we needed a early drop off center. It was close to 1,000 a month! So we decided that I would stay home, I mean it did cut down on the family money but why pay all that to have a stranger bond w/YOUR baby? So we cut back on groceries ( no more steack 3 times per week) and I got rid on my denali for a more econmical trail blazer & my husband sold his sumer "baby" mustang & his motercyclye. It took some getting used to, but now we miss none of it!! 18 months ago we had baby #2 and I know w/ 2 there is no way we could/would do daycare. But we mannage, I use alot less gas by not working (my drive to work was 60 miles per day) and I don't eat luch out or go out w/ the girls after work plus it is always casual friday, I do not need to get out of my pjs at all If I don't want to!!! SO that saves to . Needless to say I would recomed sitting down & playing w/ numbers to see f you can stay home, you just may save money by doing so, don't just take into consieration the paycheck vs. dayare but all that goes w/ work gas wear & tear on your car, clothing, coffee, lunches, parking, and so on! Best of luck & don't worry I was a bit freaked out when our #2 was on the way but it will all work out, god is sending you another lil angel!

Have you checked other daycares? They may have less expensive prices. Can you stay home for longer after the baby is born and not have any daycare?

I hate to say this, can you work 2nd shift while Dad works 1st so there is no daycare. My husband and I did this for 3 years with our first and then until my oldest started school after our 2nd was born. It's tough, but daycare was very minimal.

Good luck. Hope you don't get too many smart comments.

Well I live in Alabama and I have a home daycare and charge $75 per week. Everyone thinks that is high around here but I am actually on the lower end. Anway I wanted to let you know why daycares charge so much. Here is a breakdown of the costs we have:

Food, diapers/wipes if they provide them, taxes, yearly training we have to have which is not cheap I tell you, regular supplies like toilet paper and paper towels, toys, art supplies, transportation costs, insurances (ours doubled with a home daycare so I couldn't imagine the cost of a big daycare), employee wages.

I do believe some daycares charge alot just to get rich but most do it just to pay expenses and make enough to make a living. Just look around at different rates. I do believe a home daycare would be lots cheaper. I charge $75 and big daycares charge $80-$95 here so I am cheaper and the children get more one on one time.

And do you realize all daycare workers including home daycare owners get paid less than minimum wage up to $7/hr according to hours worked. For example I work 10 hour days, spend about 2 hours on weekends setting up, spend 1-2 hours a day before hours and after hours to set up/cook/clean, etc, and I spend alot of my time with new clients so all in all I maybe actually make right at $7/hr which isn't much for what I do. Of course I go beyond what I have to do but I want my kids to be completely happy and have lots of fun.

I also agree with the person who said you could get with other friends and try to work out schedules. Also look into a family friend or relative who doesn't work who might want the extra money. Of course this may be illegal in your state. In Alabama it is illegal to keep a child without being licensed. But most friends/families who dont work will keep your child for alot less. Before I had a home daycare I kept an infant and I only charged $60 a week instead of the $85 the daycare she had her in was charging. It helped her and me by giving me more income (I worked at Family Dollar and got my hours cut to only weekends) and her cheaper childcare.

You might try an in-home daycare that wont charge as much for bringing two children.

I'm in the same situation. We can afford it - but its insane to think you are paying that much for daycare. Luckily my oldest will start Kindergarten after 3 or 4 months so we only have to pay it for that long.

Congrats and Good Luck.

I would raise your prices. My daycare provider charges us $20/day - she supplies the food and we supply everything else. Our agreement is $100/week ($20/day) unless otherwise discussed. If I am off work that day, he doesn't go to daycare and we still pay for the day. If she is sick or unable to watch him, we do not pay for the day. I am pregnant with my second and we plan on sending my son at least 3 times a week while I am on maternity leave. She'll get paid per day ... $20/day and we will call her Sunday night and tell her which days he will be coming and we will pay accordingly. We pay for those days regardless if he shows or not.

How much would you charge if you were doing it for a living?

Yes I think it is exensive. I stay at home with my kids because of this, and because I want to. There has been times that we needed money desperately, and I couldn't work because it's so expensive. However they have to make a living too. The price difference probably depends on where you live too. Most childcare providers shouldn't charge that much though if they want business.
Maybe you should look around...

This is precisely why I opened my own in-home daycare. I don't charge nearly that much but it brings in just enough for us to get by and I get to stay home with my babies.

Some daycares have a sliding scale rate and I would also look into scholarship/grants. My town offers $ for preschool children.

My husband and I have treaked our work schedules (we both work full time 40 hours plus a week) so that our daughter only has to go to school two days a week.

You might check with other moms in your area to find a part time nanny or someone that does day care in their home.

It also maybe time to think about being a stay at home mom.

Congrats and Good Luck.

Try a collective. That's the easiest way to swing it. Bring together a bunch of parents and:
-volunteer to watch the kids in shifts
-pay for someone to watch them
-do a little of each

That way, you don't have to pay for profits that a private operator would take to cover his/her own salary.

Take heart. They will be in school soon enough. Your earning power will also get better as you get older. This might be the most difficult time.
