My first guess would have tp be Madaline Murray O'hare because of her lawsuit that took prayer out of the public schools.

Most likely O'hare. With the misconception that she took prayer out of school. I'm amazed at the people who do not read up on these types of things... especially since they feel threatened by it. Kind of hard to stop someone from praying *wink*. What she did was make it illegal for the public schools to promote one religion over another. Which, I'm sure many would say they are glad that Wiccans, Muslims, Buddhists, etc are not allowed to lead such things in the schools. But they are upset because their religion isn't promoted over all others.

This is the only woman I know of that would be considered "hated" in America. She's the only one that gets brought up the most (next to Hillary Clinton, but I can see why people don't like her).

The phrase refers to Madalyn Murray O'Hair who, in a 1963 court case, took organized, school-sanctioned prayer out of the American public schools.

That *was* a good thing, as [organized, school-sanctioned] prayer in school violated the "First Freedom:" our freedom of religion.

However, just because Madalyn won an important landmark case than advanced our freedoms it doesn't mean she was a good person. She was a cynical and hateful woman and perhaps the only American who tried to defect to the Soviet Union.

She founded an organization called American Atheists which defends the separation of church and state. After Madalyn's dissapearance and murder, leadership of AA shifted to Ellen Johnson. The organization has an admirable mission, but the legitmacy of Ellen's leadership and other Board of Directors is questionable. In addition, Ellen and AA in general tout Madalyn as an "atheist heroine," a stance that many other atheists disagree with (including me).

AA's santification of O'Hair is most likely the principle reason for its paulty membership of some 2,500 members while census accounts of religious affiliations place America's number of atheists much higher (that and Madalyn stole money from American Atheists themselves).

A piece of irony: Madalyn's only living son became a Christian fundamentalist preacher after her death.

I'm sure there are many contenders, but Victoria Woodhull--free lover, suffragette, spiritualist, female presidential candidate before women could even vote, and yellow journalist--was the first to spring to my mind.

Maddy O' Hair because she took the prayer out of schools. Not just the prayer but, the Pledge Of Allegiance and the Ten Commandments. She broke the American way and the traditions.

Roseanne Barr when she slaughtered the National Anthem. People took it far to seriously, in my opinion. I am sure there are more, that was the first in my head. Jane Fonda was hated when she went to Hanoi, there is another one.

Are you vying for the position? My guess would be Jane Fonda, although I would rather change it to the most disliked. We still have to love her.
