allowable instalatons for this product key and it gives me an address for further instuctions what should i do.

You don't say what anti virus system that you are updating. Usually if the update is minor you don't have to reinstall the product key. And there are other anti virus systems, that with any update they want you to reinstall their product key.
Product keys are "case sensitive". you must copy & paste into the box exact. (Typing usually does not work).
If by chance you are using a crack/serial, after three times the rogue key will be blocked as the software company from whom you download the antivirus system will have your IP address.
This means they know the ID, of your computer and location of your ISP. (Internet Service Provider).
Sincerely hope the issue is just you need to copy & paste.

if its avast just go and get another key (number)
every they ask you to re register or buy the pro version
