Most other major religions have been the underdogs at some point during their history. Christians were initially persecuted by the Romans and the Jews. Jews were later persecuted by Christians, on the basis of the betrayal of Judas and the role of the Jewish authorities in Jesus's execution. Both faiths have some tradition of ignoring criticism from unbelievers. I don't know enough about the other faiths mentioned to make comment on their attitudes.
Islam started out as a very confrontational faith, building an empire by conquest and conversion during the lifetime of it's founder (Yes, I know Islam claims to be the uncorrupted Abrahamic religion.) The Qur'an contains both injunctions to respect other religions, and to fight and subdue unbelievers during war. This leads to a wide range of attitudes towards non-Muslims, ranging from tolerance to death threats. Active opposition to Islam or disrespect to it or it's founder is intolerable to many Muslims.

Islam is sensitive to us Muslims because we practically follow everything and our way of life very carefully and what was revealed by God. If someone says something insulting to our religion esp. the Holy Prophet, it is quite obvious he/she is just jealous and ignorant about Islam and its light. Not only it will insult the Prophet but our religion and our way of life.
I do not get your point as in getting so upset in the slightest criticism. What? you don't think Muslims won't be upset from the Pope who guides over a billion Catholics say such a verse regarding the holy prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). Even though the Pope wasn't the one who stated the verse but some Byzantine Emperor like a thousand or so years ago still shows that he is disrespectful towards Islam. If he is so respectful to the religion, why would he put such a thing?
Anyway, Muslims would get offended but the actions such as the killing of a Nun in Africa was totally wrong. Muslims shouldn't use killings from someone just insulting the religion. As a Muslim, I think ALL Muslims should just ignore the things which is said anything Islamophobic because 2 bads don't make a right.
Also, if someone offended your religion just like Mel Gibson and his anti-jewish movie, the Passion of the Christ as well as the South Park show showing the Virgin Mary having blood spew from her vagina. Wouldn't that offend you? Jews, Christians, etc. behave in a manner but not all. Not all Muslims respond to such violences.
Another awful thing is the fact that the Media is the source for all the hatred to peoples of different religions, cultures, and languages. The Media should not show so much hate and criticism on such things even if it had to do with a Byzantine Emperor long dead saying blasphemous verses from the Pope.

IMMATURITY, Commonly seen in children.
Also "there is a very good historical reason for Muslims to be more inclined to retaliation for derogatory comments made at them or their belief system. What is that historical reason? Well, it is found in the behaviour of their most revered religious figure – The Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad responded to verbal threats and insults with violence, hence it naturally follows that his followers, in emulating his example, would also act in a reactionary manner whenever their sensitivities have been violated. No other religious figure, whether it is Jesus, Buddha, Confucius, or Krishna has acted in a violent manner in the same way Muhammad has. That is the reason pure and simple, despite how much politically correct apologists for Islam would say otherwise"

Ahem, lots of people from different religions get angry and upset over stuff that is said about them, it is just that the press highlights the Muslims because of 9/11 and 7/7 and all that. They have a right ot believe what they believe and it is unfair when the British press is blasphemous or says something offensive and defends with 'freedom of speech.' With every right comes a responsibility, and everybody just wants rights without the responsibilities attached.

Possibly because their clerics have enough sense to realise how easily they could lose their power and livliehood.
If any criticism of the superstition (sorry religion) is proved to be true, it casts doubt on the entire structure.
Also, the moslems are intent on rewriting history to eliminate the violent issues from their past, in order to show how peaceful they are, as can be seen by the cartoons and Pope's speech issues.
Remember, their idea of peace is different to ours. Peace, for them means eliminating all contest and dissention. If all non-moslems are killed off, there'll be nodody to disagree with their beliefs.

In Islam, your not supposed to harm anyone, or take revenge unless in self defence.. The terrorists, they're not proper muslims coz they don't actually follow the religion correctly, some are brainwashed and some kill coz someone has come and taken over their home/country and killin their family etc.. I do get annoyed when someone says somethin bad about ANY religion, but i don't go round killin anyone.. that's just dumb.. Yes, I'm muslim =) And proud.. Does it not seem that Islam has been targeted a lot lately..? Always somethin bad about it in the media.. Is there ever any good thing about it printed?! I know someone's gonna say 'coz there isn't any good thing about it..' But one thing I learnt.. 'Good news is bad news.. and doesn't sell papers..' Unless about something in particular.. Take it easy people, have fun..

I noticed that not that many Muslims are answering this question for some reason.
I have been told that Muslims are required to act righteous in public in order to set a good example for society. That is why they will sometime pray out loud in public -- to encourage others to do the same.
By publicly protesting against what they believe is wrong, they probably believe that they are setting an example.

I get plenty upset when I see some of the attacks against my Faith... but unlike some I do not go off and email death threats as some do from here... and yes I have received such threats..... and I for sure aint going to cut anyones head off for saying Jesus is an ingnotant dorks fantacy or worse... who have sent the worst threats to me?... those "claiming" to be muslim... and those "claiming to be "christian".... some are just nasty. some spell worse than I do...but...
of all the repies I have received, by far, the positive outnumber the negative by an overwhelming majority... even when some disagree with me they are polite and friendly... I have had my day made nicer many times by the replies I have received from posters here...

They must like their religion a lot.
When somebody made fun of Christianity, my religion, I just laughed and said "whatever". I wish some Muslims wouldn't kill people for the smallest things.
